Agni is the root of Ayurveda for creating a balanced and healthy body and mind. Agni is known as the digestive fire. Ideally, we all want to experience Sama Agni, or balanced digestive fire. Unfortunately, with the western diet and increasing amounts of stress perpetuating unhealthy eating habits, many of us are far from balanced. Let us take a look at what Sama Agni looks like and how you can start creating healthier habits to kindle and restore your agni.
Those who experience Sama Agni are truly blessed. These folks are spared from the intense cravings and digestive disturbances that many of us experience regularly (think bloating, gas, heartburn, etc) When one has Sama Agni, they are able to digest their food properly and absorb the nutrients efficiently. Sama Agni doesn’t only bless one with wonderful digestion but also with a strong immune system, mental and emotional clarity, and a sense of calm and stability even during stressful events.
Yes, your gut has everything to do with your mind and emotional wellbeing. Ayurveda has known this for many, many years and western science is now finding the connection as well.
If you aren’t currently experiencing Sama Agni, no need to worry. Below are some simple and effective ways to kindle your agni so that you can achieve optimal digestion and mental/emotional balance.
If you are experiencing:
- Sluggish digestion
- Bloating & heaviness especially after eating
- Chronic congestion/cough/cold
- Edema
- Allergies
- Depression
- Cravings for hot & spicy foods
You are likely experiencing Manda Agni. Manda Agni is associated with Kapha Dosha (Earth & Water). To balance Mana Agni, you will want to stoke your digestive fire. You can do this by simply drinking a warm cup of tea (ginger is ideal) prior to each meal. Or you can try a post digestive chewing blend (check out the recipe here)
You will also want to follow a Kapha pacifying diet. To keep it simple, you will want to enjoy lighter meals with plenty of fresh (and well cooked) vegetables. Increase the astringent, bitter and pungent tastes in your meals by adding bitter greens and nourishing spices.
If you are experiencing:
- Irregular appetite
- Irregular digestion
- Gas
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Dry skin/cracking joints
- Anxiety
- Cravings for fried, hot or spicy foods.
You are likely experiencing Vishama Agni. Vishama Agni is associated with Vata Dosha (air & space) Here, you will also want to stoke the digestive fire but also add in more stability and grounding qualities to balance out the mobile and light qualities of Vata Dosha. Enjoying warm, grounding foods and eating at set times will greatly help regulate your agni.
Try a Vata pacifying diet to assist in balancing your agni. We are currently entering the Vata time of year (autumn season) so you especially want to take care during this time. Enjoy your locally grown vegetables that are ready to be harvested at this time. Nourish yourself with well cooked foods that include the sweet, salty and sour tastes. Add heavier foods, like oil and ghee, into your diet and enjoy a daily (or weekly) self-abyhanga practice.
If you are experiencing:
- Heartburn
- Hot flashes
- Hypermetabolism
- Insatiable hunger
- Colitis
- Inflammation
- Hives/rashes
- Anger/Hate
- Cravings for sweet foods
You may be experiencing Tikshna Agni. Tikshna Agni is associated with Pitta (Fire & Water) Lean into a Pitta pacifying diet by reducing or avoiding red meat, spicy or fried foods. Enjoy cooling foods and beverages such as cucumber, mint teas, melon and milk to name a few. You will want to increase your sweet, bitter and astringent tastes within your meals.
For creating optimal digestion, it is also recommended for all agni types to eat your heaviest meal during the middle of the day (between 10-2 pm) and to ideally eat your meals at the same time each day.
Be well. Be kind. And enjoy your journey to wellness.
